 Caping For A Shoulder Mount

With a sharp knife cut the hide circling the body behind the shoulder approximately 8 to 10 inches behind the front legs. Cut the skin around the legs just above the knees an additional cut will be needed from the back of the leg to the body cut behind the legs to the body making a V. Peel the skin forward to the head with as little knife work as possible exposing the neck. Cut into the neck approximately 4 to 5 inches down from the back of the head. Circle the neck cutting down to the spinal column. After this , cut  or twist the head off the neck. Clean any dirt or excess blood off the cape and head with cold water and dry with paper towels. Be sure hide has cooled completely and then roll the hide up and put it in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer until it is time to be transported to taxidermist.

Small Game Animals

Small animals such as bobcats or coyotes or smaller should not be skinned. Do not gut the animal. Small animals such as these will spoil quickly because of their thin hide and bacteria. If you can not take the small game animal to a taxidermist immediately, as soon as the carcass cools completely put it in a plastic bag and freeze it. With the epidemic of rabies evident in many areas of the country, be sure to take every safety measure necessary when handling your game.

Things To Remember

Always bring your trophy to the taxidermist with all of the proper licenses and tags.

It is best to cool animals as soon as possible in order to avoid spoilage and preserve trophy.

When tagging your trophy do not put the tag through the ear.

Avoid dragging the trophy out of the field if at all possible. If you do need to drag your trophy, drag it with the shoulders as far off the ground as possible and avoid rocks and branches.

When field dressing a trophy to be mounted, do not cut into the chest or neck area.

Remember, your taxidermist can always cut off excess hide but they can not add what they do not have. When caping out your trophy more is always better!!!
